Does Analgin help with toothache and is it dangerous to use?

Although Analgin really helps to relieve not very severe toothache, however, this drug can hardly be considered a good choice ...

Analgin is in our country, perhaps, one of the most famous painkillers available for purchase without a prescription. It was obtained in laboratories back in 1920, and after a few years it was actively used in medical practice, quickly gaining popularity among consumers around the world - primarily due to its relatively high efficiency and wide availability. Analgin is used in Russia from toothache quite often today, even despite the presence of significant shortcomings, which we will talk about later.

An essential feature of the action of Analgin as an anesthetic is not the absolute completeness of the effect achieved. Simply put, Analgin helps with toothache, but almost never completely relieves it. For example, if the pain is strong enough, then it will still be felt by a person, although not with the severity as before taking the remedy.

With very severe toothache, in most cases, Analgin will be an ineffective drug.

In this regard, Analgin is inferior to more modern analgesics. But the duration of its action is about the same as that of relatively new powerful drugs, for example, Ketanov and Ketorol - about 5-6 hours.

As a result, the main area of application of Analgin is assistance with not very severe pains. If the tooth hurts very badly (acute pulpitis, periodontitis, etc.), then Analgin in such cases helps only to a small extent.

But nevertheless, the main drawback of Analgin is in contraindications to its use and caused side effects. In some countries of the world, it is even banned due to the fact that it is potentially capable of causing deadly pathologies. Therefore, taking Analgin “out of habit”, with the first hints of pain, as many older people often do today, is a very risky event.

The main disadvantage of the drug is dangerous side effects, which is why it is banned in many countries of the world.

Today we can say for sure that Analgin is far from the best choice for relieving toothache.

Feedback

“Analgin drank all her youth from toothache and did not even worry. My teeth are bad since childhood, I already went to college with two crowns and a bunch of fillings, but the main thing is very sensitive. I was also surprised that many classmates walk with a bunch of holes open and do not suffer especially, and even the smallest caries already starts to hurt. And just that - I can’t sleep right away, there was such a severe toothache. Analgin, on the other hand, drank it — and it was normal, tolerant, and if she didn’t shoot hard, she could completely pass. But now it turned out that I can’t do it with my kidneys at all. The doctor also said that it’s bad for blood to drink it all the time .... "

The principle of action of Analgin

The action of Analgin is in many ways similar to the action of the so-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Metamizole sodium - the main component of Analgin tablets - blocks the enzyme that provides the production of prostaglandins in the body.

The active substance of analgin is metamizole sodium (chemical formula)

On a note

Prostaglandins are biologically active substances that play a significant role in the development of pain syndromes and inflammatory processes.

Since the concentration of prostaglandins decreases, the severity of the pain syndrome decreases.

In addition, the active substance of Analgin prevents the conduct of pain impulses along the nerve bundles and has a fairly well-defined antipyretic effect.

As mentioned above, Analgin is not the most powerful analgesic, and with toothache it does not help effectively in all cases. In addition, the drug practically does not have any significant anti-inflammatory properties.Therefore, if an inflammatory process develops in a tooth, periosteum or gum, then you should not even hope that taking Analgin tablets will be able to somehow slow down or reduce it.

Metamizole sodium does not have pronounced anti-inflammatory properties, so the therapeutic effect of it should not be counted on.

Rules for the use of the drug

Although Analgin can be used intramuscularly in medical practice, however, to relieve toothache, the general population, of course, are used to taking the drug only in pill form.

According to the instructions for use, adults can drink 1 tablet of Analgin 3 times a day at approximately equal intervals. In case of toothache in children, the drug is given taking into account the age of the child:

  • From a year to 14 years appoint half a tablet 2 times a day;
  • From 14 years old - 1 tablet 2-3 times a day.

The dosage of the drug is determined primarily by the age of the person.

Children under the age of Analgin should not be given at all. Although the temptation of many parents happens, especially when the baby’s teeth are cut and he can cry from pain for hours on end.

Do not exceed the above dosages: if too large amounts of the drug are introduced into the body, digestive tract disorders, heart rhythm disturbances, tinnitus, convulsions, acute agranulocytosis can occur. If such symptoms occur, activated charcoal, gastric lavage, laxatives and plenty of drinking are needed.

Feedback

“I knew that Analgin helps with toothache and headache, but somehow it wasn’t that he urgently needed. And then the tooth ached during the campaign, so much so that it’s really possible to take off the route and let the whole group down. And of the painkillers, only Aspirin and Analgin. And nothing, Analgin helped. In the morning he drank a pill, walked all day invigorated, in the evening rinsed his mouth with warm water. It’s good that all this happened five days before the end of the campaign, I endured it normally. ”

Side effects and contraindications for taking Analgin

A very dangerous side effect of taking Analgin is agranulocytosis - a sharp decrease in the number of neutrophils in the blood and, as a result, the subsequent very high vulnerability of the body to viral and bacterial infections. Agranulocytosis can occur with continuous prolonged use of Analgin, but in exceptional cases it develops acutely even after taking one tablet.

Some manifestations of agranulocytosis ...

On a note

According to statistics, death as a result of agranulocytosis occurs in 7% of cases. That is why Analgin is banned in many countries, but not in Russia. In the Russian Federation, they limited themselves to the exclusion of Analgin from the list of drugs for beneficiaries.

Other side effects of the drug are:

  • Allergic reactions, including in very rare cases, Quincke's edema and anaphylactic shock;
  • Lowering blood pressure;
  • Anuria and other impaired renal function.

Reduced blood pressure and impaired renal function, if these pathologies already exist in humans, are contraindications for taking Analgin. In addition, even in emergency cases with acute toothache and the inability to use other drugs, Analgin is contraindicated in the following cases:

  1. With impaired liver function, hepatitis;
  2. Anemia and leukopenia;
  3. During pregnancy;
  4. During lactation.

In most of these cases, toothache is less of a nuisance than possible negative effects. And in general, the use of Analgin from toothache or any other is better agreed with the doctor, at least by telephone.

Contraindications to taking Analgin

More modern analogues of Analgin

It is precisely because of the ability to cause life-threatening agranulocytosis and because of the limited analgesic effect that Analgin is today considered a rather outdated drug.

Its more modern counterparts are Ketanov, Ketorol, Ketorolac, Nimesil, Dolak and some other means. Often they help to completely eliminate even very severe pain, and are not so dangerous to use. The main drawback of these drugs is prescription leave, which is why it is quite difficult to buy them without a doctor’s prescription even if you are in the pharmacy.In addition, the cost of these drugs is significantly higher than that of Analgin.

Ketanov pain medication (in tablets)

Anesthetic Nimesil (powder)

As a result, the low price, wide availability and fame of Analgin are the keys to the fact that the people will use it as a remedy for toothache for a long time, and are unlikely to quickly give way to the same Ketorol or Ketanov.

However, you should always remember that Analgin, like any other pain medication, is just a way to alleviate pain while waiting for a planned visit to the doctor. In no case should you use it with the aim of maximally delaying the appointment with the dentist - this will only lead to further development of dental disease, deterioration of their condition and, ultimately, to even more severe pain, as well as complex and expensive treatment.

If you regularly suppress toothache with pills and do not go to the doctor’s office, then in the future this can lead to very big problems ...

Feedback

“It seems to me that drinking toothache with pills is a very bad practice. For this, pain is needed so that we constantly remember about some kind of disease. A tooth ache - that means you need to go to the doctor, it hurts a lot - means that you can’t even put it off for a day. Dentists for acute pain always take quickly, even with a busy schedule. My mother-in-law dabbled in Analgin, then she took Nise when her teeth hurt. She said, they say, hereditary. Then once could not stand it, went to the dentist. So she immediately removed three teeth, put about five fillings and two prostheses. About three months I ran to the doctors, I took all my savings for three years there. And why? Because it endured and the pain suppressed. I’d go right away, I would put a seal - and the whole business. ”

    Hello, but it helps me a lot, only I don’t drink it, but I’m lying on my tooth, even with severe pain. Just a tooth swallow does not help at all.

    About 20 years ago, when I first knew a real toothache, only analgin was in the household, and even then in a small amount. Take a pill - a little easier. But the trouble is, it soon ended, and we lived in a small village - what kind of pharmacy is it and, especially, a dentist? The mother went to the grandmother (neighbor), brings another 4 or 5 tablets, in a paper, slightly yellowed plate. There was no doubt that they had expired a long time ago, and maybe even from the time of the USSR. But then I was not up to the expiration date, because of the pain I was ready to climb the walls. So, I drank 1 of those pills, and half of the head from the side of a diseased tooth became like a wooden one, and my jaw seemed numb. No pain was felt at all, and touching his cheek with his hand - as if not to his own. Then I very carefully divided each of those pills, first into half, and then into 4 parts.

    Those pieces acted, though not for long, but the fact remains. I have never seen a similar analgin again. So it looks like the current analgin is not at all what it once was 🙂

    I also had old analgin and no-spa, and really, just miraculous, unlike modern tablets with the same name. I don’t understand why they say that ketorol is safer than analginum, on the contrary, it is dangerous for blood and especially for the stomach, some develop an ulcer from one injection ...

    A tooth started to hurt last night, and the pain was so intense that it was not clear which tooth hurts. Drank at first nemisil - did not help. Then ketorol also did not help. The pain was terrible, I already cried. I drank another ketorol. No result. She began to google how pain can be relieved, with mouth and water began to rinse her mouth - for a while the pain was relieved, and again the pain resumed. Even the children’s kamistad smeared his teeth and gums, he was numb and the pain slightly subsided for a while. And so I suffered from 2 nights to 8 in the morning. Then I found analgin, drank a pill and put another piece on my tooth. Immediately the pain began to subside, and I fell asleep. Then she ate during the day and again her teeth ached. I put a piece of analgin on the tooth - immediately the pain passes, but for a while, not for long. So all day and save myself from pain. I'm going to the dentist tomorrow.

    And my tooth collapsed from a piece of dipyrone laid on the tooth, there were only loose roots. And now everyone has become inflamed, I'm afraid to go to the doctor to tear it out, since there’s nothing to grab at ...

      Hello! Such roots are almost always removed without problems. If you are over 40, then it is already 100% that there will be no problems with disconnected roots. Their dental surgeons love, because they do not cause difficulties: neither with anesthesia, nor with the process of removal itself. We usually get laid in 2-3 minutes, a maximum of 5-7. So don’t be afraid! It is better to remove the roots in a planned way than in the emergency case - with edema or severe pain.

    And I removed the wisdom tooth 2 days ago ... But I had it treated and the channels were sealed. It was very difficult to retire, I cursed a hundred times the day I decided to save it (but, on the other hand, I walked with him for about 5 years, maybe more). But here is the problem: the tooth was removed, and from the side of this tooth on the adjacent caries it turned out to be at least deep, and maybe worse. He is also in pain now ... I would gladly run to the doctor, but: 1. The wound has not yet healed properly. 2. Do not really touch the cheek (there is no strong swelling, but it hurts, like a good bruise). 3. I can’t open the jaw normally (and the tooth is below and the hole is on the side from the back), and even now the weekend is off. So I’m tossing for the second day. I can’t say that the pain is unbearable - you can endure painkillers so far. But she is somehow wandering - and gives in the ear, and in the temple ... Especially fun at night ((
