The use of Sensodyne toothpastes for sensitive teeth

Sensodyne toothpastes really help to combat the problem of increased tooth sensitivity, and we’ll talk about what exactly this is achieved by ...

Sensodyne toothpaste is designed primarily for people suffering from tooth sensitivity. However, before you run to the nearest pharmacy to buy it, let's first look at some important nuances regarding both the use of this paste and the very problem of tooth sensitivity - hyperesthesia.

Generally speaking, there are several types of Sensodyne pastes with different compositions and different properties:

  • Sensodyne Toothpaste with Fluoride;
  • For instant protection;
  • Whitening;
  • Comprehensive protection

And others (including many items in a foreign language).

Further we will consider the main types in more detail.

On a note

Sensodyne toothpastes for sensitive teeth are developed by GlaxoSmithKline, a British brand with offices in 115 countries. GSK is not only a pharmaceutical developer who carries out research activities in more than two dozen laboratories, but also a manufacturer with its own facilities. In particular, pasta and related products are produced at 70 factories located in different parts of the world.

The names of Sensodyne pastes sold in Russia and abroad are somewhat different from each other.

With tooth sensitivity of the 1st degree (when they respond only to temperature stimuli and sometimes mechanical), the use of Sensodyne toothpaste does have a rather pronounced positive effect. Simply put, a person ceases to suffer from pain: he can finally eat normally, brush his teeth without pain, do not frown when inhaling cold air, etc.

The use of Sensodyne toothpastes in very many cases really helps to eliminate the painful sensitivity of the teeth to the action of various irritants.

This is also indicated by numerous reviews of ordinary people on the Internet - most of them confirm a decrease in tooth sensitivity after the use of Sensodyn toothpastes.

Feedback

“I decided to try Sensodyne on the advice of colleagues from work. Frankly, I did not really hope for a miracle, because over the year I had already tried several different pastes, supposedly reducing sensitivity. But this time my teeth appreciated the novelty. In just a few days, I could normally eat hot and cold! And after a month I could even bite ice cream without a shudder - this is a real achievement for me. So in my case, Sensodyne paid off 100%. ”

How Sensodyne Paste Solves Sensitive Teeth

In many cases, the problem of increased tooth sensitivity is associated with thinning of enamel due to its abrasion or various kinds of damage. When the enamel becomes too thin, the so-called dentinal tubules are exposed - microscopic tubes located in the thickness of the dentin and associated with nerve endings, which, in turn, are connected to the pulp of the tooth.

The picture shows schematically the dentinal tubules with nerve endings emanating from the pulp of the tooth.

Photograph of dentin under an electron microscope - the mouths of the dentinal tubules are visible.

The dentinal tubules (tubules) are filled with a fluid that comes in motion from various external influences: heating, cooling, exposure to acids, etc. All this can be accompanied by weak and very severe painful sensations.

It is interesting

The causes of hyperesthesia can be very different:

  • Damage to the enamel when exposed to strong acids, both organic and mineral (including due to the habit of regularly eating acidic juices, fruits, berries);
  • Carious damage to tooth tissue;
  • Violation of the exchange of calcium and phosphorus in the body, as a result of which the processes of demineralization of enamel and its thinning may intensify;
  • The presence of wedge-shaped defects (deepening in the cervical area of the teeth);
  • Gum disease, accompanied by exposure of the necks and roots of the teeth;
  • Grinding a tooth under a crown;
  • Damage to enamel after a chemical bleaching procedure;
  • Exposure of the dentinal tubules after professional oral hygiene (removal of tartar and plaque);
  • Enamel abrasion due to the regular use of highly abrasive whitening pastes and / or a hard toothbrush

And etc.

The photo shows wedge-shaped defects in the cervical zone - often they cause increased sensitivity of the teeth.

Most often, the sensitivity of the teeth increases primarily in the gum zone, where the enamel is initially thinner. Cervical caries also often develops here.

Sensodyne pastes struggle with the problem of increased sensitivity of teeth due to the following main components:

  1. Potassium nitrate - potassium ions, penetrating into the dentinal tubules, are able to accumulate and suppress the excitability of nerve endings. For this reason, many other toothpastes for sensitive teeth also include potassium salts (this may not necessarily be nitrate - they also use, for example, potassium chloride, potassium pyrophosphate, etc.);
  2. Compounds contributing to the restoration of enamel - in particular, the NovAmin complex, which is a combination of calcium and phosphorus compounds that can create hydroxyapatite on the surface of the dentin and in the dentinal tubules (hydroxyapatite is the mineral compound that tooth enamel mainly consists of);
  3. Fluoride - not found in all Sensodyne pastes. Promotes the formation on the tooth surface of fluorapatite, resistant to the action of oral acids. In fact, a special protective layer is formed on the surface of the enamel, which prevents demineralization and also helps to reduce tooth sensitivity.
  4. Salts of strontium (in particular, acetate) - contribute to blockage of the dentinal tubules.

On a note

In toothpastes, Sensodyne fluoride is contained in the form of sodium fluoride. Today, this component is considered somewhat obsolete, and the so-called aminofluoride, which is faster and more effective, is more “advanced”.

If you see Sodium Fluoride among the components of the paste, then it contains fluoride.

Sensodyne pastes are low- and medium-abrasive (the RDA abrasive index is in the range of 60-120, depending on the type of paste).

Feedback

“My teeth are very sore, they don’t react very much to the hot, but they always hurt the cold, always on the street. Recently I put a couple of fillings, so now all the upper teeth became even more painful. I decided to try Sensodyne, I’ve been cleaning it for a week and the sensitivity has clearly decreased, I drink normal water. But the most important thing is that next to the fillings it stopped hurting!

Before this, I didn’t really buy toothpaste for sensitive teeth, but I liked Sensodyne while she cleaned it. ”

Sensodyne Instant Effect and Opinion

Sensodyn Toothpaste The instant effect is specially formulated to reduce the painful sensitivity of teeth as quickly as possible. The manufacturer claims that the effect of its use occurs within 60 seconds of applying the paste on the teeth.

Sensodyne Toothpaste Instant

A feature of Sensodyne paste instant effect is the presence of strontium acetate in its composition. Soluble strontium salts are able to obstruct (plug) the dentinal tubules by binding to the protein matrix of dentin and subsequent precipitation in the form of insoluble complexes. This blocks the movement of fluid flow inside the tubules and, as a result, reduces the sensitivity of the tooth to irritants.

The picture shows how strontium acetate helps reduce tooth sensitivity.

In addition, the paste contains sodium fluoride (Sodium Fluoride), which also contributes to the blockage of the dentinal tubules (fluorapatite) and has a positive effect on reducing tooth sensitivity.

Composition of Toothpaste Sensodyne Instant Effect:

Active substances in Sensodyne toothpaste Instant effect are strontium acetate and sodium fluoride.

In general, the Sensodyne toothpaste Instant Effect in many cases is really capable of quickly removing pain reactions of the teeth to various irritants, although the pronounced effect does not always occur in one application. To achieve a well-tangible and lasting result, you will have to use a paste for 2-3 days, while you need to brush your teeth twice a day.

According to reviews, when it is necessary to quickly remove painful sensitivity, the following technique sometimes helps: it is recommended to spread a little Sensodyne paste Maximum protection on the fingertip and rub for three minutes in the painful areas. Then rinse your mouth.

Feedback

“... A very mixed impression of this paste with an instant effect. On the one hand, now I don’t writhe when I brush my teeth, but on the other, it annoys me that I constantly feed myself with fluorine, which is harmful to the body. I even have a feeling that her tongue is numb. Yes, and the price of sensodyne is rather big, for sensitive teeth there are cheaper options. So I haven’t decided for myself which is better. ”

Sensodyne Gentle whitening and its action

Sensodyne Whitening Toothpaste Gentle whitening is a medium abrasive hygiene product for the oral cavity that restores the natural color of enamel, reduces tooth sensitivity and freshens breath.

Sensodyne Gentle whitening - this is what the packaging and the tube of toothpaste look like.

The composition of the paste Sensodyne Gentle whitening:

But the composition of this paste ...

Decreased tooth sensitivity is achieved through the use of potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride.

As for the whitening properties - here you need to understand that the whitening effect and a decrease in tooth sensitivity are often difficult to combine in one product. In this case, it is more correct to speak not about enamel bleaching, but about its clarification due to the removal of colored plaque and tartar from its surface. This function is performed by the abrasive system of toothpaste and sodium tripolyphosphate, which is a powerful complexing agent and is able to bind calcium ions from the tartar matrix, thereby contributing to its loosening.

However:

  • with the same success, the abrasive system will erase not only plaque, but also partially the tooth enamel;
  • and sodium tripolyphosphate will “draw out” calcium ions not only from tartar, but also partly from the structure of enamel.

So the composition of the Sensodyne bleaching toothpaste is, in fact, an attempt to combine not very well compatible properties in one product (this is probably done because the whitening pastes are now in fashion and are well bought).

With the tendency of enamel to abrasion and a pronounced sensitivity of teeth, an alternative option would probably be preferable.

With high tooth sensitivity, the use of whitening toothpastes is often undesirable.

Feedback

“Personally, I have only positive impressions of using Sensodyne bleaching paste, and the reviews on various sites are simply surprising. I don’t know what people are counting on, apparently they want to get snow-white porcelain teeth in a couple of uses. This is nonsense. For a month, my teeth have obviously brightened somewhere in tone, I am pleased with this. Naturally, if a person has yellowness in his mouth, then it is foolish to expect a Hollywood smile, and then write that the paste does not work. Cleanses well, reduces sensitivity, slightly whitens and the price is small. What else does? For me it’s such a great option ... "

Sensodyne with fluoride

The widely known Sensodin fluoride toothpaste is, so to speak, a time-tested product that has been on the market for many years. At the heart of its action are two main compounds: sodium fluoride and potassium nitrate.

The active components of Sensodyne fluoride paste are sodium fluoride and potassium nitrate, which effectively help reduce tooth sensitivity.

As already noted above, sodium fluoride promotes the formation of fluorapatite on the surface of tooth enamel, and also, importantly, inside the dentinal tubules, favoring their blockage. And potassium ions, concentrating at the nerve endings inside the tubules, reduce their susceptibility to irritating effects.

Such a tandem of two substances provides Sensodyne F with a pronounced effect on reducing tooth sensitivity.

The composition of the Sensodyne fluoride paste:

The photo shows the composition of Sensodyne fluoride toothpaste

The effectiveness of the product is confirmed by relevant tests, as well as reviews of ordinary people. Although it should be noted that the composition of the paste is inferior to the above Sensodyne Maximum Protection, the recipe of which is more "advanced".

Contraindication to the use of Sensodyne with fluoride is an individual intolerance to the components of the drug and age up to 12 years.

Feedback

“We have been using Sensodyne paste with fluoride as a whole family for 6 years. I like that over the years there has not been a single new hole in the teeth and the taste is pleasant. My daughter has not even a hint of tooth decay in her permanent teeth, this is the best indicator for me. Although I heard that Sensodyne is not suitable for everyone, I still think that the paste is worthy. ”

Larisa, Moscow

Other Toothpastes in the Sensodyne Line

In addition to the above toothpastes, Sensodyne also has the following products:

  • Extra Freshness - contains potassium nitrate (5%) and sodium fluoride (0.145% in terms of fluorine). Its peculiarity is a pronounced mint flavor, contributing to the freshening of the breath.Sensodyne Extra Freshness
  • Comprehensive protection - a feature of this paste is the content of zinc citrate in its composition (along with potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride). Zinc citrate is often used in toothpastes for sensitive teeth, has a bactericidal and fungicidal effect, which helps to maintain gum health.Sensodyne Comprehensive Protection
  • Gum health is very similar in composition to the previous paste (Comprehensive protection): it also contains zinc citrate, potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. Positioned as a paste for sensitive teeth, while helping to take care of gum health.

Feedback

“Often faced with the problem of tooth soreness from cold and hot, and sometimes from something sweet. And so, having read all kinds of advertisements, Sensodin bought pasta comprehensive protection. And somehow one disappointment, for 3 weeks (!) Of use, the sensitivity has slightly decreased, maybe a little bit at all. And refreshing is not very good. So I can’t say anything good. ”

Taisiya, Khabarovsk

In general, it can be noted that Sensodyn toothpastes can be a good solution for people with sensitive teeth. However, they do not help everyone and not always, since hyperesthesia can be caused by various reasons, and sometimes it is impossible to solve the problem with toothpaste alone.

If you have ever used any of Sensodyne toothpastes, do not forget to leave your feedback about the effect obtained at the bottom of this page.

    I got Sensodin fluoride toothpaste on the advice of a friend (the dentist recommended it). After the first brushing, she stopped feeling pain, and there was comfort in the mouth. Pleasant feeling after cleaning. So I won’t look at the price. Prior to that I used toothpastes LACALUT sensitive, PRESIDENT, SPLAT. It seems that, as they were used, they liked everything, but now I will focus on SENSODIN.

    I used to hear about SENSODIN toothpaste, but somehow I didn’t believe it at first. Now it’s summer outside - I’m really wanting cold ice cream or water, but I can’t afford it. I bought this toothpaste and on the second day I drank cold water. I am delighted. I will dwell on her. Everything suits me - both price and quality.

    I am very disappointed in this toothpaste! I will never buy it again. You give such money and all to no avail, I really regretted that I bought it. It would be better if I spent this money on three or four tubes of regular pasta. Around cheating!

    Pasta helps, but not as much as it is advertised. And the price is at least doubled.

    A disgusting paste, as if they poured sand into the mouth, there is no freshness after brushing it in the mouth. I immediately want to drink water so that the feeling of sand in my mouth disappears. A disgusting, selective, indecent cleanser (does not clean) for teeth. Some kind of sand, in short. Mockery of people. 30 rubles is not even worth the feeling.

    I bought Sensodyne “Instant Effect” toothpaste. After using it, the sensitivity of my teeth increased three times. Fillings flew along with tartar, wear on the enamel of teeth appeared, and teeth began to hurt. Now I can’t eat anything at all - neither hot, nor cold, nor sour, nor sweet! I can’t even treat my teeth - pain. Horror. Just some mockery, it got a lot worse!

    I use toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It is heated on the teeth and pain is felt at first. After three applications, this pain began to decrease. An interesting paste, the teeth felt like after polishing.
