Is it possible to get rid of tooth decay at home?

Despite the large number of dental clinics today, many people are still trying to get rid of caries at home on their own. We will talk further about whether this is possible ...

To get rid of tooth decay at home is a very difficult task, and from the point of view of the dentist it is completely unacceptable: the doctor would immediately say that you need to run to the nearest clinic and solve your problem there. And it is obvious to a person who understands the nature of this disease that tooth decay is not just an infection, it cannot be destroyed with a simple pill or alcohol tincture.

There are cases when especially desperate (or desperate) patients try to scrape tooth decay with emery paper or scrape it with a steel needle. Others approach the issue even more sophisticatedly and try to whiten the darkened carious areas with bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

For example, some daredevils try to scrap off carious areas mechanically, or to dissolve or discolor them with something caustic.

In an attempt to remove caries, needles, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and even sandpaper can be used.

How effective and dangerous is this? And are there really effective methods to get rid of tooth decay at home? Let's figure it out ...

A bit about self-treatment

Generally speaking, caries is somewhat similar to pathologies such as inflammation of the appendix, curvature of the nasal septum, or stomach ulcer. Only no one ever thinks of shaving a chisel on the septum of the nose with a chisel or performing abdominal surgery on the stomach of the house in front of a mirror. For some reason, many people are ready to treat caries at home.

The photo shows typical carious browning in the fissure region of the tooth - it is almost impossible to remove them at home.

It is impossible to get rid of tooth decay, which is already clearly visible on the teeth, at home. Caries is the destruction of tooth tissues, first enamel, then dentin. Moreover, this process is irreversible: people's teeth are not restored, enamel does not grow on its own, and the removal of caries at home, alas, is possible only in the stories of village healers.

However, at the very early stage of the disease, when caries is a bright white spot on the enamel (or slightly pigmented), you can really get rid of it yourself. But this is done only after consultation with the dentist.

And here caries is shown in the initial stage of the so-called white spot, so it is quite possible to fight it yourself.

If you try to get rid of caries on your own, using folk remedies, grandmother's recipes or the advice of friends, then you can play through to the complications due to which the tooth will need to be removed. There are cases when, after such postponements of a visit to the dentist and independent experiments, one had to treat gingivitis and periodontitis against the background of a trauma to the gingival mucosa in the form of a chemical burn from “grandmother's recipes”.

Caries at the spot stage is easier to see in the mouth in the mirror on the front teeth. On the contact and oral surfaces of the teeth (as well as on the buccal surfaces of the molars), it is difficult to see such spots. Sometimes they simply do not pay attention.

Most easily, the first signs of caries are found on the front teeth (the example shows pigmented enamel that has become porous due to gradual demineralization).

Especially acute pains at this stage do not occur (especially on molars, which do not reach the cold air when breathing), and in most cases the carious spot is identified by the doctor during the examination. The period for which such a stain will form is usually from 3 to 12 months.

From a purely psychological point of view, patients who are inclined to look for ways to get rid of caries at home almost always wait until the last and go to the doctor with acute or unbearable pain. In such cases, the moment when the tooth could still be cured on its own, but under the supervision of a doctor, is already lost and the doctor has to dissect the tooth and fill in the best case.

If you miss a moment and do not heal caries in the initial stage in time, you will inevitably have to put a seal ...

Feedback

“I tried different folk methods from caries. Propolis tincture first, rinsed her mouth. No result. I applied radish with honey for about two months every day. Nothing noticeable happened either. I tried to remove caries with bleach, thundered to the clinic with burns to the gums and tongue. The doctor there looked at me as if she were insane. As a result, for half an hour I was drilled caries and put a seal. They didn’t give an injection, but there was no pain at all. In general, all games with folk recipes are my great stupidity. Now, if I see that a spot has appeared somewhere, I’m going to the clinic right away and for 800 rubles all problems will be solved for me. ”

Anna, Rostov-on-Don

And most importantly - the only truly effective method of combating caries at home involves a strict adherence to the doctor’s instructions after diagnosing the disease and determining the stage of its development. The doctor will conclude whether treatment without filling is possible at all, evaluate the cariogenic situation in the mouth, treat the damaged enamel, and prescribe the procedure for using the necessary products at home. And then, conducting the treatment on his own, the patient will have to go to the control examinations with the agreed regularity.

What can be done at home?

At home, there are two fairly effective ways to deal with initial caries:

  1. Tooth treatment with special gels that contribute to the restoration of enamel. Such an approach is possible and effective only in the early stages of caries development, when only enamel is partially damaged and the disease has not yet affected dentin.
  2. Prevention of caries, when the teeth are not yet affected (or well cured), but the cariogenic situation in the oral cavity requires the use of additional protective measures.

To restore enamel-affected caries at home, remineralizing gels, for example, Rox Medical Minerals, are quite suitable

In any case, before using remineralizing gels at home, the doctor must find all the areas on the teeth to be treated. Sometimes preparation of such sites by special means is also required.

It is also useful to read: Methods of caries prevention in children

Just buying a gel in a pharmacy and starting to smear a carious tooth with it, even if only with a stain at an early stage, is highly undesirable, since such processing can be incomplete and insufficient. And therefore - ineffective.

Other methods of getting rid of caries are implemented only by a specialist. By the way, the application procedure of ICON, which is quite popular today, takes an hour and a half in the clinic and does not require any efforts on the part of the patient. And the result will be even more reliable than when using remineralizing gels.

The photo shows an example of a tooth with initial caries before treatment.

The tooth is isolated from the oral cavity using a rubber dam, ICON is applied to the enamel.

And this is how a tooth looks after treatment using ICON technology

At home, the fight against tooth decay usually comes down to its prevention.

From the practice of the dentist

The modern ICON technique for getting rid of caries in the spot stage allows you to solve the problem of initial enamel damage literally in one day without using a drill. This is a microinvasive therapy with minimal tissue damage in the demineralization zone. It is carried out without anesthesia and does not cause discomfort. It is used in relation to caries spots on the vestibular (external) and proximal (contact) surfaces - each type has its own set of drugs.

The essence of the technique is that after plaque is removed, a dense pseudo-healthy enamel layer is removed, and light-cured polymer material is introduced (infiltrated) into the lesion site. The polymer resin seals the pores in the subsurface layer of enamel, which gives a good result, and for a long time. The method of infiltration is based only on the use of chemical compounds without mechanical processing of the tooth, which allows it to be actively used in children from the age of 3. Like any technique, it requires mandatory monitoring and recording the result after a period set individually by the dentist.

Competent prevention of caries at home

The rules for caries prevention at home are numerous and are not limited to brushing your teeth twice a day. Warning methods to combat tooth decay are divided into three groups:

  • Systemic
  • Local;
  • Additional.

With proper prevention of caries at home, it is possible to quite reliably protect teeth from decay.

Systemic preventive measures include:

  1. Compliance with a competent diet with a minimum amount of confectionery and flour, the presence of dairy products, fish, fresh vegetables and fruits is mandatory.
  2. Prevention of vitamin deficiencies.
  3. The use of tableted fluoride preparations and products with a high content of fluorides, including fluorinated water and salt (under the strict supervision of a dentist).
  4. Ordering food - refusing snacks, meals at night (getting rid of this bad night habit can really extend the life of your teeth).
  5. A quick fight against somatic diseases that contribute to the weakening of immunity.

In this section, you can add control over the temperature of dishes - too hot and cold products contribute to the appearance of microcracks in enamel.

Very hot and cold products contribute to the appearance of microcracks in tooth enamel.

Local methods of prevention include:

  1. Toothbrushing with correctly selected pastes;
  2. The use of special rinses and solutions for treating teeth;
  3. Toothbrushing after eating with the help of threads, and only for lack of them is the use of toothpicks.

Dental floss (floss) Oral-B

The use of dental floss allows you to effectively clean the interdental spaces, where food debris and plaque often accumulate.

And already additional measures for dental care include the use of chewing gum for no more than 15 minutes and only after eating, as well as regular removal of smoker's plaque on the teeth.

In any case, to prevent caries, even without signs of its presence on the teeth, you should definitely go to the dentist for an examination. If there are no damaged teeth and treatment will not be performed, such an examination will be inexpensive and painless. But it was during this time that the doctor will be able to assess the cariogenic situation in the mouth, calculate special indices, correctly compile a list of drugs that can be used for prophylaxis at home, and also explain the rules for using dental remedies and select such a set that is best suited for a particular to the patient.

Everyday Caries

Means for combating caries at home are quite numerous, and choosing the right drug can be difficult for an unprepared person.

First of all, toothpastes are selected. Most of them are therapeutic and prophylactic, that is, they not only brush their teeth from plaque, but also provide enamel with macro- and microelements, and contribute to the prevention of diseases of the teeth and gums. In fact, they also make it possible to get rid of the earliest manifestations of caries in the form of enamel demineralization, which can even be visually indistinguishable (but sometimes, for example, gives itself out as a regular feeling of a sore mouth).

Toothpastes with fluoride content are very effective against caries.

To strengthen enamel and brush your teeth after caries treatment, fluoride and calcium pastes should be purchased. It is these substances that provide enamel strengthening with direct contact of the paste with it. To do this, for example, toothpastes New Pearls Fluoride, Fluorodent, Colgate Maximum, Lacalut Fluor, Pepsodent.

In areas where fluoride is already quite a lot in water, using pasta with it can be harmful because of the risk of an excess of this element in the body. Especially it is necessary to control the use of such pastes by children - even children's pastes with a reduced amount of fluoride must be used very carefully. Here, much depends on the individual characteristics of the patient, the properties of the paste and some other factors - everything should be carried out as directed and under the supervision of a dentist.

In some cases, the use of fluoride toothpastes at home can be harmful, for example, with fluorosis (white spots appear on the teeth due to an excess of this element in the body).

With quick tooth abrasion, pastes with low abrasion and high fluoride content should be purchased to restore enamel. With extreme caution, you should approach the purchase of a toothpaste paste with a tooth whitening function - often such pastes simply erase the plaque and then damage the enamel (that is, they whiten due to increased abrasive properties). Significantly more reliable is the use of therapeutic and prophylactic toothpastes with an average cleansing ability, combined with a good brush and the right brushing technique.

It is useful for smokers to conduct professional dental hygiene and learn all the same proper brushing techniques. Yellow plaque on their teeth usually occurs due to improper operation with the toothbrush.

Smoker's yellow teeth

Antimicrobial enzyme pastes also contribute to the effective prevention of tooth decay. But they should be alternated with the use of other pastes, since their regular use can not only save you from cariogenic bacteria, but also lead to a disruption in the composition of microflora in the mouth and the development of pathogenic microorganisms resistance to the enzymes themselves.

Filaments for cleaning the interdental space are useful to choose those that include fluoride. Among them are Paro Riser-Floss, PresiDENT, Jordan InBetween, but you can buy almost any that are available in pharmacies. Almost all of them contain peppermint flavoring.

Rinses that protect against caries are also quite numerous, and their choice is also better to entrust to the doctor. Rinse agents Bionorm, Fluorodent, Elmex are very famous.

When home treatment only hurts

But most folk recipes for tooth decay are frankly useless, and many are even harmful.

An attempt to independently get rid of deep caries at home can end very poorly ...

So, for example, rinsing the mouth with decoctions of herbs and other natural preparations - chamomile, sage, oak bark - has an anti-inflammatory effect, but absolutely does not help to remove caries at home. The situation is similar with alcohol tinctures of propolis, Japanese sophora and simple alcohol or vodka - they can only disinfect inflamed gums or relieve pain.

But trying to get rid of tooth decay by regular use of milk powder or honey is frankly dangerous. The carbohydrates contained in them only contribute to the growth of bacteria and lead to a more intensive development of caries.

And in no case should you try to independently remove caries at home by mechanical or chemical methods. In the villages and in the army, it comes to the point that they try to clean up caries with sandpaper - it is obvious that even after going through such torture, after a couple of months the patient will find caries in the same place. Bacteria that once did their job will do it again, but on exposed dentin or damaged enamel - already much faster.

Do not try to clean up the carious areas with sandpaper - so you only additionally damage the enamel and expose the vulnerable dentin.

Deeply pigmented enamel can only be removed by the dentist, followed by tooth filling.

Previously, among folk methods, there was a way to rid your teeth of caries using hydrogen peroxide. This technique practically does not give an effect, but it can lead to burns in the oral cavity.

From dental practice

One of his colleagues had an epic case when a girl came to see him with literally burnt gums, tongue and inner surfaces of her cheeks. As it turned out, she tried to get rid of caries at home in 1 day and at the same time whiten her teeth with “Dressing duckling”. When a colleague asked her if she had any doubts about the ability of the product to dissolve literally everything, including the stable coating on the tile, she replied that it was written on the can with the product that it was safe for enamel.

Seeing the root: why are you so afraid of doctors?

Those who are afraid to treat their teeth, remembering the terrible drill in Soviet childhood, or those who simply spare money for a filling, usually try to get rid of tooth decay in one way or another at home. Both of these reasons are broken down into reality:

  1. Treat tooth decay in clinics today it’s absolutely painless - modern technology allows you to clean out tissue damaged by caries without any unpleasant sensations, and with a deep tooth lesion, doctors do high-quality anesthesia. Exceptional cases when anesthesia does not work or you can’t do it are extremely rare, and fearing that you will fall into these percentages is the same as hoping to win the lottery.Today, anesthesia is often used in dental treatment, which makes the whole procedure almost completely painless.
  2. Started caries, complicated by pulpitis or periodontitis, is several times more expensive to treat than caries in the initial stages of development. Therefore, a simple seal today is a good investment in health and protecting the budget from a significant hole in the future.

And most importantly: caries is a disease against which there are no effective folk remedies. Trying to treat him at home without the control of a doctor is like removing your appendix with scissors on the couch.Be prudent and take advantage of the modern benefits of civilization, and leave the prejudices of greedy dentists and sparks from the eyes in clinics to those who delight others with black teeth.

The best thing you can do at home to treat tooth decay is to call your friends, choose a good clinic and make an appointment with the dentist. Take care of yourself!

I specifically started everything, 5 ceramic crowns were placed. The most painful of this is when a nerve is pulled out and a tooth is ground for a crown. An unpleasant thing, although it probably doesn’t hurt with anesthesia, I just decided to save some money on it) And it cost 50k, it’s a very light price, I’ll tell you.

The trick is that when they remove the caries, that is, they wash the enamel and put a seal, over time, the seal becomes unusable and needs to be changed, and at the same time, the remains are drilled again and the seal is put back. And this whole procedure as a result leads to the fact that the tooth is easier to pull out and insert a new one. So go to drill teeth more often, gentlemen!

Hello! I try to go to dentists only as a last resort! And that's why - at first, like an idiot, I walked every half a year, such as prevention and all that ... But then, for the first time in my life, at 21 I got a toothache. I went to the hospital, they said, you just need to treat. In no case do not delete! He was treated ... They put the old arsenic to kill the nerve, so I ran around the walls for 2 hours in a hostel! Then the nerve was removed, everything seems to be fine, but after a month the seal fell out, a new seal was larger, again a month, again fell out, and then the tooth crumbled and had to be removed. But how did he hurt me! Then there were other teeth that started to hurt about 3-4 days after treatment. And they all had to be removed.

About 7-8 years ago a piece of tooth broke off (a live nerve), went to the hospital, asked to be removed. Sadistic excuses began again, such as “Maybe we can treat you ...” Aha ... So that I still suffer. Recently, this tooth began to hurt, went to PAID dentistry with the hope that they would tear it out without question. Yeah right now! Again excuses: "There is no indication for removal." Now I’m thinking how they can create “indications” for removal (well, there is a loose tooth, flux or something else ...) But I definitely WILL NOT treat it!

Hello! I think that you mean a milk tooth with carious destruction. As a rule, teeth that are at the stage of a physiological shift do not require treatment. However, you should consult with a pediatric dentist who will monitor the shift: sometimes it happens that moving teeth “inhibit” eruption, or teeth begin to erupt crookedly. Since the position of the permanent teeth in the row is crucial in the future, it is best to constantly monitor the process of their eruption by the doctor.

Teeth are, of course, a problem. Normal specialists are few, expensive, or if a person is afraid (for example, a mental illness), then doctors are not taken. I want to share my experience. There is a drug "Argenate" two-component. In case of caries (but the tooth does not hurt yet, NERVE IS NOT BARNED!), The tooth may react to cold. To process according to the instructions, the only negative is that the processing location is black. After 15 minutes, you can put a seal. For the filling, the so-called Cavitan + glass ionomer cement was chosen, although it may be possible to choose cheaper, but from this group. For more loaded teeth (chewing), glass ionomer cement with the addition of silver “Argetsem” is very suitable. Even if the seal falls out after a while, we process it again and set it. It is necessary to try to put without excess. Of course, this is not the answer to all questions, but if the alternative is “an operation under general anesthesia with tracheal tubing”. Important: read the instructions, the ingredients are very aggressive, you need to be very careful. Yes, nevertheless, who has the same hopeless situation, consult your good dentist first.I hope someone helps.

Hello! If we are talking about a speck that has arisen, that is, an acquired defect, then it really can progress over time. The exact time period for the transition of a white spot to another form (carious cavity) cannot be accurately guessed. This is an individual characteristic. In order to find out if you have initial caries, you should contact your dentist and carry out a diagnostic staining of the tooth. Caries is usually confirmed in more than 80-90% of such cases.

There is no point in waiting for it to turn into an aggressive stage (especially on the front tooth). Start treatment of this form: the doctor may recommend at this stage the treatment of caries without a drill. For example, enamel remineralization course. The ICON technique for treating caries in the stage of a spot without boron is now popular, but it is not suitable in all clinical cases and is more expensive than fluoridation (although it is sometimes more effective). On your part, it remains only to calm down and treat the tooth at an early stage as soon as possible, it is possible that it will do even without a drill. Good luck

I have caries due to antibiotics. It turns out that there is no cure, is that true?

    Reply
    • Svyatoslav Gennadievich:

Hello! The development of caries from antibiotics is a dubious theory. Caries arises from plaque against the background of poor oral hygiene, when bacteria that provoke tooth decay are actively “working”. In this case, there is a direct effect of carbohydrates, that is, sweets (sweets, cookies, etc.), but not antibiotics. Antibiotics (tetracycline, for example) can cause a disease such as “tetracycline teeth” - these are non-carious defects, and have nothing to do with caries.

I don’t understand why you suddenly decided that there is no cure for tooth decay? If the tooth is badly damaged by caries, they resort to orthopedic treatment (veneers, inlays, crowns), and if the tooth is damaged a little, therapeutic procedures are performed: filling or restoration of the tooth with or without a pin.

I also went to the dentist today, I thought I would only put a seal, but it turned out that the nerve needs to be removed.I had to do a tooth near, two nerves were removed, and two fillings cost 7300. And the doctor said that crowns should be placed on top - this is 9 thousand for two teeth. But as a child I was sealed, and on the one hand (left) they have been standing for 13 years. But today, with the right set again. They didn’t take painkillers for a long time, they injected 6 times, then everything worked out with God. But when I left the office and arrived home, I was in a terrible state - my mouth was numb, the back of my head and temple hurt. The pain is terrible, lay like a vegetable for 7 hours. Here, now I’m lying more or less, the pain goes away, I really want to eat and I can’t open my jaw - only tea.

Indeed, you need to go to the dentist more often, and in case of pain we immediately chew the tablets, and then it only gets worse and weep more. All patience and healthy teeth. Do not start your teeth and do not be afraid, because our teeth are the key to a beautiful and healthy smile!

Hello! The fact is that tooth decay can no longer be removed mechanically (using a brush and toothpaste). Prevention of caries that has not yet arisen with the help of only a toothbrush and toothpaste is also not the most effective and efficient measure without competent cleaning of the interdental spaces. That is why without the hygiene of contact points there is a caries of the wall, which sooner or later begins to be visualized in the mirror.

I understand that a person’s consciousness appears in many respects when he already sees a problem. But the fight against already existing caries (except caries in the stage of a white spot) is practically impossible without the preparation of the tooth, that is, without treating it from carious tissues. Most often this is done with a drill, less often with a laser. The fact that you, in addition to the useless struggle with the existing caries, also injure the marginal gum, is a very dangerous moment in the current situation, since this can lead to periodontitis, and this is a gradual loosening and loss of teeth.

I recommend contacting a dentist-therapist and treating all the carious lesions, and as hygiene for the future, so that there are no new carious areas, focus on treating contact surfaces (flosses or irrigators) and carry out preventive fluoridation.

Hello. Please explain the procedure for placing a filling (cement) on a carious tooth. Is it permissible (as I was done at a state institution) to simply drill a recess and put a seal, and leave the black carious areas unattended and simply “cover” with a cement seal? (After 3 days after setting the seal, the piece fell off, and on the edges of the recess blackness was a month ago).

And the second question: they cleaned the canal (pulpitis). Then rinse 4 days of the open canal at home with a cotton plug (delirium, of course, incredible, but the doctor prescribed me). All in the same institution, tooth 2 lower left. They put the same cement (by the way, white). The tooth was ill almost 2 weeks after the procedures, changed color from native to dark gray, and now stands out sharply from the rest. The seal crumbles (six months ago it was). I'm afraid to return there already.

Is this really supposed to happen?

Hello! Unfortunately, in a routine budgetary approach, there is such a thing as a chronic lack of time (this is the first), and against this background, a specialist often degrades. In fact, a cement filling in Soviet times with good doctor skills could have stood for more than 10 years (I myself have two cement fillings - 12-13 years each). But with violations of its formulation, especially when carious tissues (black, brown, etc.) are left, the seal almost always falls off in the first days or weeks, less often - a little later.

So, as you yourself understand, the work has been done in relation to the tooth by 2+ or 3 by a big minus.

I had caries on the penultimate chewing tooth. It was removed after years of fuss with a seal. Now caries on the adjacent one, i.e. the last tooth - was cervical, filled, then there was a caries "in the middle" on top of the tooth. It also beat off the edge, a rather large piece of enamel. It’s good if I manage the seal, but even it is quite expensive, especially for the schoolgirl. And also scared and ashamed in front of parents.

The worst thing is that now my already poorly developed lower jaw is getting smaller every day. So do not believe in conspiracies and evil eye.
