Home caries treatment: is it really possible?

Sometimes it’s really possible to cure a tooth affected by caries at home, but in this difficult matter there are a number of important nuances ...

It is possible to treat caries at home only at certain stages of the disease, when it is possible to restore the enamel and do without removing the tissues affected by caries. Such an independent fight against the disease requires serious methodology and regularity, and its success largely depends on what stage of development caries was discovered and whether the means to combat it were correctly selected.

Nevertheless, quite often there are daredevils trying to remove the tissues affected by caries from the tooth at home, for example, with sandpaper or just scrape them with a needle. Some even try to use bleach or hydrogen peroxide, seriously believing that the darkened areas after such procedures will again become white and healthy. Below we will consider how such approaches to treatment are effective and safe for health.

Perhaps, most often with self-treatment of caries at home, people try to use sandpaper, a needle or whiten carious areas with something, for example, hydrogen peroxide.

It is important to understand that at home it is possible to treat tooth decay only at the first, earliest stage, when a tooth lesion looks like a bright spot. At this stage, with the help of special measures and means, it is completely possible to stop the further destruction of enamel and, moreover, ensure the introduction of mineral components into it to restore the initial healthy state.

Important!

It is quite difficult to distinguish at home a disease in the spot stage from superficial caries, which can no longer be treated without a dentist. At the same time, methods and tools that may be effective at the very beginning of the development of the disease, a little later, will not give the desired result (at this stage, not only calcium, fluorine and phosphorus are washed out of the enamel, but its protein matrix is also partially destroyed). Therefore, a dentist should be consulted at least to ensure that the doctor determines whether caries can be cured without drilling a tooth. By the way, a good dentist will never remove damaged tissue that can still be repaired by remineralization methods. And the doctor will be able to find out the cause of the devastation that has arisen and find effective remedies for the treatment of caries at home.

The photo shows an example of caries in the stage of the so-called white spot (sometimes it is also called chalky)

Moreover, during the time spent on avoiding a visit to the doctor and trying to independently treat caries, the disease can be complicated by pulpitis or, worse, periodontitis. In such a situation, a person, instead of putting a neat seal several months ago, will be forced to undergo pulp (nerve) removal or gum treatment.

Most of the problems people usually create for themselves. Many dentists can cite several cases from their practice when patients tried to grind caries, scrape it off with a hard object or bleach it with some household chemical product. As a result, they earned themselves, at best, additional damage to tooth enamel, and at worst, severe complications of caries or burns to the mouth. And if each of such homegrown doctors knew in advance when caries could no longer be treated at home, such sad cases would be much less.

In most cases, when trying to independently scrape off the darkened areas from the tooth, the carious cavity will only deepen, and the risk of complications will also increase ...

Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to find out whether caries can be cured at home in your particular case ...

Feedback

“When I served, we had a lieutenant in the unit who did not recognize dentists and removed stones from his teeth with a simple gypsy needle. He did it very well, but a couple of times it was such that caries appeared. In this case, too, he poked a hole with the same needle and then washed it with peroxide. True, swearing heavily, because it is very painful. The first time he was taken to the hospital with inflammation - a couple of days after such a home-made operation, his face was twice smashed. And the second time he couldn’t even clean everything, because, apparently, he started to shoot in the tooth very strongly. ”

What looks like caries that can be cured at home

At each stage of development, caries manifests itself as a certain set of external manifestations and symptoms. You can treat the disease at home if:

  1. The tooth does not hurt, and even if cold water and air flow by inhalation get on it.
  2. The caries itself looks just like a white smooth spot.
  3. There are no black dots and dashes (the latter are characteristic of fissure caries).

But at the stage of a white spot, it is quite possible to restore the properties of tooth enamel not only at the dentist, but also at home.

If there is a hole in the enamel (cavity), then it will definitely not be possible to cure a tooth without filling. In many cases, such carious lesions that can only be treated by a dentist give themselves out as distinct brown or black spots.

It is also useful to read: Chronic caries in adults and children

This is especially true for fissures, where such spots can sometimes be very small and do not bother with anything, which is why many do not perceive them as a serious problem. Meanwhile, the lesion area under such a spot may already penetrate deep into the dentin.

Even insignificant dark spots on the chewing surface of the tooth (in the fissure area) are sometimes a kind of entrance hole into the deep carious cavities, penetrating to the dentin layer ...

Due to the small size of the darkened areas in the fissure area, many believe that such spots can simply be whitened or sanded at home, and tooth decay as if this would be cured. In fact, such a stain is just a sign that caries cannot be cured without filling.

It is pointless to try to remove dark, decayed tooth tissues by mechanical methods on your own. It may seem that if you clean the darkened areas with a needle or grind them with some abrasive material (sandpaper, file), then the cleaned space itself will “overgrow”. This is a gross mistake: the carious cavity will never recover on its own, and with a high probability the tooth tissue in this area will continue to deteriorate after cleaning.

Deep carious cavities never recover on their own, and attempts to clean them with your own hands will only aggravate the problem.

It is interesting

A white spot on the tooth is formed during demineralization of a subsurface thin layer of enamel. Its main components - hydroxyapatites and fluorapatites - are dissolved by acids from the oral cavity and washed out. If you reduce the amount of such acids and regularly apply to the teeth the substances from which secondary apatites are formed, in particular fluorine and calcium compounds, this enamel layer can be restored.

If treatment is not started in time, then the enamel protein matrix begins to gradually break down, which ensures order in the arrangement of fluorine and hydroxyapatite particles. At this stage, enamel strength decreases, it becomes rough. In places where the protein matrix is damaged, the tissue will no longer be restored - the mineral components will no longer be arranged in order between the collagen fibers.

What can you do yourself?

Treatment of caries at home should be aimed at restoring the enamel that started to break down and at improving the cariogenic situation in the oral cavity.

For this, in most cases it will be useful:

  1. To work out and strictly observe the regimen of brushing your teeth, choose a suitable toothpaste. This will stop or slow down tooth damage from bacteria in the mouth and the acids they produce.
  2. To restore enamel using remineralization methods - the teeth are treated with special mineralizing gels. These include, for example, R.O.C.S Medical Minerals, GC Tooth Mousse, Fluocal Gel and others. When using them, the damaged area is saturated with mineral components necessary for the restoration of enamel.Remineralizing drug Fluocal Gel (Fluocal gel)Remineralizing application cream GC Tooth Mousse
  3. Use rinsing agents that destroy cariogenic bacteria (fluorine compounds that contribute to the mineralization of caries-damaged tissues may also be included in such rinses).
  4. Follow a diet with a limited amount of sweet and starchy foods.
  5. To develop the correct diet with no snacks between meals and a mandatory mouthwash after each meal.
  6. In the diet, increase the amount of foods with a high content of calcium, and in some cases (as indicated by the doctor), salt and water with additional amounts of fluoride are used.

But the treatment of caries with folk remedies without the control of a dentist in most cases will be more likely harmful than useful ...

When caries treatment at home only hurts

It is strongly not recommended to use the following folk remedies for the treatment of caries:

  1. Milk powder - it significantly increases the rate of bacterial growth in the mouth.
  2. Apply honey to your teeth - for the same reason.
  3. Rinse your mouth with vodka with horseradish - despite the certain antiseptic properties of this tincture, its beneficial effect will be minimal, but it may well harm the mucous membrane of the mouth.
  4. Hydrogen peroxide, which many try to bleach damaged areas. Even if some whitening happens and you do not get a mucous burn, the therapeutic effect of this procedure will be minimal - the whitened tooth tissue will continue to collapse.

In an attempt to cure tooth decay with hydrogen peroxide, only uneven spotting of the tooth can be achieved, and a burn of the oral mucosa is also possible.

It is also pointless to try to shut up carious holes with propolis - it does not have any regenerative properties, and the carbohydrates contained in it are an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.

And certainly you should not try to treat caries with propolis, clogging the holes in the tooth with pieces of it - the carbohydrates contained in this substance will only lead to the activation of cariogenic microorganisms.

What self-medication can lead to: mistakes that cannot be repeated

The most sad consequences usually arise in those cases when the owner of a diseased tooth tries to get rid of caries without a dentist at those stages of the development of the disease, at which the doctor would have to put a lot of effort.

From the experience of the dentist

Unfortunately, there are frequent cases of visiting a dentist after self-treatment of a tooth. Sometimes during caries people put a cotton swab moistened with anesthetic tooth drops or anesthetics, which they take out freely in a pharmacy. This allows you to safely eat, drink cold and hot water without signs of caries (pain from irritants), but the result of such self-medication is often in the best case, deep caries, and in the worst, its complications: pulpitis, periodontitis or serious purulent forms of diseases surrounding the root tooth tissue (periostitis, osteomyelitis, abscess, etc.).

Some patients even use caries conspiracies (especially older women), which for some unknown reason translate the acute form of the disease into a chronic one. The result of this bioenergetic treatment that has not been studied to date is the late admission to the dentist (5-20 years after the onset of the formation of a tooth disease) with multiple roots in the oral cavity and beginning problems in the bone tissue, up to its deformation due to chronic osteomyelitis against the background of so many infected roots with granulomas and cysts. So it is better not to treat caries with conspiracies and prayers: in spite of a possible “lull”, the result is very deplorable.

Oddly enough, but conspiracies sometimes seem to reduce toothache, but caries itself does not go away with it, and in the future the problems will only increase.

The following cases are known:

  • Removing caries or tartar at home with sandpaper or a file. In such situations, the patient sometimes even experiences severe pain, but continues to “heal” (or rather, destroy) the enamel, thereby facilitating the defeat of the dentin located under it, which is more vulnerable to caries.
  • Attempts to clean carious cavities with a simple needle. Such an approach never gives a lasting result - even if you manage to clean out the darkened area, the destruction (and pigmentation) in this place will continue.
  • The use of bleach and bleach to remove dark spots on the teeth. Such a home-made “treatment” is very dangerous because of the possibility of a serious burn of the oral mucosa, and it is simply pointless, since it is not possible to whiten a tooth by such means effectively.
  • Attempts to remove carious tooth damage using concentrated vinegar essence. It’s also a very dangerous procedure, which will simply finish off the already partially destroyed enamel.

Concentrated acetic acid really dissolves tissues affected by caries, but it also destroys healthy enamel and dentin just as well, and can easily lead to burns to the oral cavity.

All of these methods are dangerous and ineffective. Practice shows that in all cases, after such self-medication, a person still finds himself in the dentist’s chair, but with significantly larger problems than those that he wanted to solve at home.

Feedback

“... I recommend that you give up all these attempts to get rid of tooth decay yourself. Yes, maybe somewhere in god-forgotten villages caries is still treated with vodka, but you are a civilized person and have the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of civilization. In Jack London, too, in the stories, the teeth were removed with a hammer and a nail, so will you also tear yourself this way today? My mother-in-law so watered a tooth with bleach in his youth in order to whiten tooth decay. Then she lay in the hospital with a burn of her mouth and larynx, hoarse for life from this ... "

From correspondence on the forum

It is very important to be honest with yourself and be aware that you are trying to find a way to treat caries at home only because you are afraid to go to the doctor or do not want to spend money.

Most likely, you already missed the stage at which caries could be cured without a doctor. And now the tooth either hurts or “pleases” you with a non-photogenic black spot. If you try to treat it at home, it will either hurt you very much, or you risk earning pulpitis or periodontitis, and the procedures at the dentist will be much longer and more expensive for you.

If the condition of the teeth is clearly poor, do not delay the visit to the dentist, since at home you can’t get rid of the problem.

The photo shows an example of deep caries, when treatment at home will be completely ineffective.

At the same time, tooth decay is treated absolutely without pain and for money that is quite lifting for almost every person, and to avoid such treatment is to doom yourself to a permanent deterioration in the condition of the tooth. Therefore, once again look at your caries and sign up as soon as possible to the doctor.

Be healthy!

Well, I treated caries like this: I gnawed a branch of mountain ash, and took it with a stick and ate it all. And you know - it's over! I am a mother of many children, and all my children are treated like this.

Better to do prevention than to treat teeth. I do everything as advised in the article: I use floss, rinse my mouth after eating, brush my teeth in the morning and evening with a good paste of ROCKS Uno Calcium.

Ladies and gentlemen, as well as teenagers and children. This is all nonsense and auto-suggestion, not medicine! Do not allow caries, try to brush your teeth more often and check up every six months with a dentist. And kids, you are not afraid of caries or a dentist, but of pain. Just talk to your mom or dad about this topic, let a doctor consult you. And it will hurt, it's true, but only during the injection. And then no.

Beets (beetroot) destroys biofilms, including caries. You can eat during the treatment. But beets in themselves are not a substitute for treatment and proper care. This is just a good additional tool.

My old-age pension is 10 thousand. We have a problem with dentists in the Kaliningrad region due to sky-high prices for treatment. On average, treatment and placement of a filling costs about 5 thousand rubles. You can’t do without a loan. And with a monthly payment of a debt on a loan, money from a pension will remain only for water and bread. In this case only pig fat will save from starvation, as in all difficult times in our country. It is sad and disappointing to watch the growing dental mafia in our country. The state threw this problem on its own. In the same Germany and in many other countries of the European Union, poor people have free fillings and free treatment. We have a compulsory health insurance policy for free dental treatment. But it actually does not work. Or a huge queue to such doctors, or poor quality of service.

Unbearable prices. In our region, in order to cure average caries, you need to pay from 2000, and if with the removal of a nerve, then from 4000 rubles. So people with bad teeth walk around until they press at all 🙁

Have you tried to treat tooth decay with proper nutrition? You need to eat cod liver, at least 2-3 cans per week (there is fish oil, vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium). And also you need to drink purchased water with natural fluoride - such as aquanika or frutonyan (but there is less fluorine). You can Borjomi (no more than a glass a day). Fluoride is harmful only when it enters the body in an amount of more than 10 mg per day. And you need 3 mg per day, i.e. 2 liters of water of 1.5 mg of fluorine - total 3. Cod liver - a must! Better not to ice cream.

Dentistry is just a business. Almost all pastes are harmful to the teeth.
